TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – Georgia Southern Softball opened the 2013 FSU Sunshine Classic with a pair of losses to Minnesota and Florida State on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles fell 5-0 to the Gophers in the opener and 4-0 to the Seminoles in game two. GSU returns to play at Dr. JoAnne Graf Field on Sunday morning, facing Minnesota at 10 a.m. before playing FSU at 2 p.m.
“We battled hard in both games and we were in it until the end,” said Head Coach Annie Smith. “We faced two of the best pitchers in the country today and we had some good at bats against both batters and got some hits.”
– GAME ONE –
Minnesota took the 5-0 win over Georgia Southern to open the weekend for the Eagles. A first inning solo home run followed by a two-RBI double Kari Dorle in the second inning gave the Gophers a 2-0 lead. One run in both the fourth and fifth innings gave Minnesota their run total.
Allie Miles took the loss for Georgia Southern in the pitching circle to fall to 3-3 on the year while Marla Thompson worked the final two innings. Thompson allowed just one hit in her appearance as the sophomore closed out the game.
– GAME TWO –
Florida State took the second game of the day, 4-0 behind 13 strikeouts by Monica Perry. The Eagle offense had three hits in the game off a number of hard hit balls.
The Seminoles got their first run after earning three-straight walks to load the bases in the third inning. An infield ground out followed by an infield error gave FSU a 2-0 lead. Florida State added to that lead in the fifth inning with a two-run home run down the left field line, giving the hosts a 4-0 advantage.
Sarah Purvis went the distance and struck out eight batters as the junior was handed the loss to fall to 7-7 on the year.
Georgia Southern faces the same two teams on Sunday morning beginning with Minnesota at 10 a.m. GSU takes on the Seminoles at 2 p.m. in the weekend finale.
