STATESBORO, Ga. – More than 20 representatives from NFL teams gathered in Statesboro today to evaluate Georgia Southern Football players in preparation for the upcoming NFL draft. In addition to today's evaluations, several teams have also scheduled private workouts in the next few weeks.
Georgia Southern's Pro Day began at Iron Works where the Eagles had standard physical measurements taken -- height, weight, arm length, wing span and hand size. Two Eagles from the 2011 squad, Mike Butler and William Maxwell, joined the 10 members of the 2012 team for vitals while seven participated in the long jump, measured vertical leap and recorded their full repetitions of the 225-lb. bench press and continued with the drills at Paulson Stadium.
"We were really excited to have so many teams represented, over 20 NFL teams today for Pro Day," said Georgia Southern Head Coach Jeff Monken. "We have several guys on our team who are legitimate prospects and that is great for our program, it's great for Georgia Southern to have that recognition. It speaks to the respect the organizations in the NFL have for this program and our players here. I think that is going to be good for the entire future of our program."
J.J. Wilcox opted to keep several of his marks from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis last month as well as his times in the agility drills. Wilcox spent much of his morning at Paulson Stadium going through defensive routes and pass defense drills and also fielded a few balls.
Safety Darius Eubanks had an all-around solid showing Friday with the fastest time on the field at 6.95 for the cone drill with 4.31 speed in the 20-yard shuttle to go along with a 34.4 inch vertical and 10'1 long jump. The Harlem, Ga., native also posted 23 reps in the bench press.
With 36 reps on the bench press, defensive tackle Brent Russell impressed all gathered in Iron Works with his rep total and determined pace. The highest total at this year's NFL Scouting Combine was 38. Russell's other results were consistent with other top players at his position.
