SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Conference honored 24 Georgia Southern student-athletes for the fall semester on its Academic All-Conference Team, announced Monday.
Women's soccer led the way for Georgia Southern as eight student-athletes earned the honor, while seven men's soccer student-athletes received the accolade. Four members of the SoCon regular-season and tournament champion Georgia Southern volleyball team were named academic all-conference and four Eagles – Thomas Hamilton (m. soccer), Kym Coley (volleyball), Emily Archer (w. soccer) and Caitlin Tongco (w. soccer) posted a 4.0 grade point average.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the fall season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions during the recently-concluded fall campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
More than 300 student-athletes earned spots on the fall 2013 Academic All-Southern Conference Team. Each of its 11 institutions had at least 22 honorees, representing the sports of football, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and volleyball.
A league-record 21 student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point averages. The previous record for 4.0 GPAs, 16, was set by the 2011 fall squad.
