McKinnon and Byrd Selected to First Team Offense; Ellison and Koo All-Freshman
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern senior offensive tackle Dorian Byrd was selected for the fourth year for All-Conference honors with back-to-back first-team honors from the Southern Conference coaches. Six Eagles in all were selected for 2013 coaches accolades with Byrd and senior Jerick McKinnon on first team offense. McKinnon led the SoCon in rushing and had three of the league's top five single-game performances in 2013.
Center Manrey Saint-Amour and offensive tackle Garrett Frye, who along with Byrd, have helped the Eagles to the top team rushing average in NCAA Division I, were selected to the second team offense.
Earning SoCon honors for the first time, seniors Kyle Oehlbeck, a linebacker, and Lavelle Westbrooks, a cornerback, were named to the Coaches All-Conference second team. Westbrooks led the league in passes defended with two interceptions and seven pass breakups and Oehlbeck was a catalyst in Georgia Southern ranking as the league's top defensive unit against the rush.
Two Eagle newcomers, quarterback Kevin Ellison and placekicker Younghoe Koo, were picked for the SoCon Coaches All-Freshman team. Ellison capped a solid year with an outstanding performance in Georgia Southern's upset of Florida last Saturday. Koo handled field goal and point after duties for the Eagles for the most of the season and hit a career-long 49-yard field goal in Georgia Southern's final SoCon game at Elon.
Georgia Southern, a 21-year member of the Southern Conference, in 2013 completed its first year of transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Eagles begin their affiliation in 2014 with the Sun Belt Conference after accepting an invitation to join the league earlier this year.
