SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern volleyball sophomore Alexandra Beecher has been named the Southern Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced today.
It's the fifth SoCon weekly award for the Eagles this season. Junior Jamie DeRatt was named Offensive Player of the Week twice, Crysten Curry was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 9, and Kym Coley earned Student-Athlete of the Week accolades Sept. 4.
Beecher averaged 6.71 digs per set in a 2-0 week for the Eagles as they won their second consecutive regular-season SoCon Championship. The libero collected 26 digs and three assists in a 3-1 win over Western Carolina and followed that with 21 digs, three assists and two aces in a 3-0 win over Appalachian State. Beecher has recorded 20 or more digs in a match eight times this season and 21 times in her career.
Georgia Southern heads to this weekend's SoCon Tournament as the top seed. The Eagles will take on eighth-seeded Elon at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C. The winner of the tournament gets the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
