CHARLESTON, SC- Georgia Southern women's soccer team earned a "W" Sunday afternoon against The Citadel. The Eagles have redeemed themselves after losing to the Bulldogs last season 4-2. The Eagles improve their record to 4-7-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the SoCon. The Bulldogs' record drops to 3-8-2 overall and 1-5 in the league.
"It was a very hard fought game, very physical," said Head Coach Brian Dunleavy. "Defensively, we were put under a lot of pressure particularly in the second half because it was very windy, and they were playing long balls to try to get in behind us. Our back four had to battle for headers the entire game. We were clinical with our finishing, and scored some excellent goals. Three points on the road is massive."
After about 33 minutes of a scoreless game, the first goal came from Nora El-Shami, an unassisted free kick from just outside the box making the scoreboard read 1-0. El-Shami's goal was her third of the season.
The Eagles remained in the lead for the rest of the first half, entering the second half 1-0. The Bulldogs equalized the score at 68 minutes, with Nicole Levermann tapping one past Eagle goalkeeper Molly Williams.
Georgia Southern retaliated just ten minutes later with Caitlin Tongco scoring her first goal of the season, improving the score to 2-1. The goal was assisted by Alex Murphy, who's shot was saved by Bulldog goalkeeper Naomi Carter, then tapped in by Tongco.
The Citadel struck back late in the game squeezing a free kick past goalkeeper Molly Williams, leveling the score to 2-2. Just twenty seconds later GSU's Alex Murphy scored the game-winning goal, bumping the Eagles up to 3-2.
The Eagles next time out is Friday, October 18th at 7pm at Eagle Field.
