Football Avoids Rain, Turns it Loose

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Football team took to the practice fields in full pads for the first time Monday morning to avoid the afternoon thunderstorms that brought Saturday's and Sunday's sessions to a halt.
In eight hours on the field, the Eagles had lost 1:45 minutes of work over the first four days. Rain seemed to fall just as the team took to the fields to start practice, which prompted Head Coach Jeff Monken to move Monday's session to 10:30 a.m.
Georgia Southern spent the past two days in shells, which allowed for some contact, but today's practice allowed the coaching staff to see the players at full speed.
"There is better intensity and a faster speed. They can just turn it loose," stated Monken about practicing in full pads. "When they are in shells, we tell them to stay off the ground. It is always good to see the guys in full pads for the first time and to see a difference from a year ago."
Eagles Add Two to Camp Roster
Georgia Southern added two players to the Fall Camp roster as announced by Head Coach Jeff Monken on Monday. The Eagles added sophomore transfer from Illinois at B-Back and freshman kicker/punter Alex Hanks from Lassiter High School in Marietta, Ga.
Former Eagle Scott Impressive in Debut
Former Georgia Southern Eagle, Laron Scott, was impressive in the Hall of Fame game on the NFL Network Sunday night.
Scott, who was playing in his first NFL exhibition game after signing as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints this past offseason, returned a kickoff 67-yards against the Arizona Cardinals. The return wasn't missed by Head Coach Jeff Monken, who viewed a replay following a team meeting.
"It was a great return. It looked just like Laron. He hit that thing up the middle and found a little crease. It is impressive to see him break some tackles."
