STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern volleyball team opened camp Aug. 7, and after three days of training, including two with double sessions, head coach Chad Callihan is pleased with the Eagles’ progress.
“The energy so far has been good, and I think we have a good opportunity to be a better defensive team than in the past,” said Callihan. “I’ve also been pleasantly surprised with the play of our freshmen.”
The Eagles return 10 letterwinners from the 2011 squad that posted an 18-15 overall record and a 10-6 mark in Southern Conference games. Three players who started half the team’s matches a season ago, Kate Van Dyke, Enjoli Johnson and Moriah Bellissimo, are back in uniform for 2012.
Van Dyke, a three-time, first-team All-SoCon selection at setter, enters the campaign just 181 assists shy of the school career record and 1,638 away from the SoCon mark. She recorded 1,465 assists in 2010, her highest output as an Eagle.
Georgia Southern opens the campaign at the University of Georgia in the Benson Hospitality Bulldog Invitational Aug. 24-26. The Eagles’ home slate begins with a 6 p.m. match against Mercer Sept. 4, and they host the SpringHill Suites Invitational, with opponents Wisconsin, Jacksonville, South Alabama and Savannah State, Sept. 13-15, in Hanner Fieldhouse.
