STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Softball picked up a pair of accolades from the Southern Conference on Friday afternoon, February 3rd, in advance of the 2012 season. Senior Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) was named SoCon Preseason Player of the Year, while sophomore Allie Miles (Dacula, Ga.) picked up SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Senior Hanna Ennis (Snellville, Ga.) earned All-SoCon Preseason Second Team honors while the eagles were picked third in the preseason poll of the head coaches.
Fogle, who earned First Team All-SoCon honors a year ago, enters her final season with the Eagles after an impressive junior campaign. Last year she hit .351 with 14 home runs to rank second in the league. The outfielder carried the Eagles to a 16-8 overall record and third place in the league.
Miles finished her freshman season with a league-best 170 strikeouts. She improved as the season progressed, posting a 2.74 ERA for the year, reducing it from 4.20 at the start of league play. Miles had a string of 26.0 innings without allowing an earned run late in conference play, and posted a pair of 15 strikeout games, the second highest single-game total in Georgia Southern history.
Ennis, who was an All-SoCon Freshman Team selection in 2009, returns for her final season in Statesboro after hitting .306 a year ago. The middle infielder slugged six home runs and 12 doubles on the season, providing protection at the second spot in the batting order.
Chattanooga, who has won the last five regular season titles, was selected first by the league's head coaches followed by College of Charleston. The Eagles earned third place with a first place vote ahead of fourth place Appalachian State.
The 2012 Southern Conference Softball Championship is scheduled for May 9-12 in Boone, N.C.
CollegeSportsMadness.com also honored Georgia Southern Softball recently by naming Miles the preseason Pitcher of the Year. The website also placed Fogle and Miles on their Preseason All-SoCon First Team.
Georgia Southern opens the 2012 season on Friday, February 10th, against George Washington at Noon in Conway, S.C. The Eagles play five games over three days to open the season before returning home for a doubleheader against Georgia State on Wednesday, February 15th, at 3 p.m. from Eagle Field.
