SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern defensive specialist Alexandra Beecher has been named the Southern Conference volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced today.
Beecher earns the honor for the third time this season and second consecutive week. The freshman set a school record with 40 digs in the Eagles' 3-2 win over Western Carolina Saturday. That total surpassed the previous record of 33, set by Stacy Lewis against Appalachian State in 1995.
Beecher averaged eight digs per set and also tallied three assists, an ace and a kill against the Catamounts. The freshman is averaging 5.09 digs per set during the Eagles' current nine-match winning streak and has posted 20 or more digs in 11 matches this season, including the last three.
It's the sixth SoCon weekly award for the Eagles this season. Beecher has also been named Freshman of the Week, Meredith Paskert was named Player of the Week, and Kate Van Dyke was named Student-Athlete of the Week.
Georgia Southern returns to action tonight against Davidson in Hanner Fieldhouse. The match is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
