Women’s Soccer Travels to Charleston, Hosts Citadel on Sunday

STATESBORO, Ga. – Southern Conference play continues this weekend as Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer travels to College of Charleston on Thursday night before returning home on Sunday to face The Citadel at Eagle Field from 2 p.m.
Southern enters the weekend tied for fifth in the SoCon Standings at 2-2 in league games. GSU is even with Davidson and College of Charleston on six points through four games. The Eagles are 6-3-3 overall which ties for the second-best overall winning total in the league.
GSU has one of the league’s most potent offenses, scoring 1.58 goals per game, tying Samford for second on the SoCon scoring chart. The Eagle defense, behind goalkeeper Katie Merson has a 0.71 goals against average which ranks second in the league.
Sophomore Sydnie Van Curen ranks as the No. 3 scorer in the SoCon with five goals. Courtney Collins, Nora El-Shami and Stephanie Gratto are part of a log-jam for ninth in the league with three goals each.
College of Charleston enters Thursday’s match with a 3-8-0 overall record and a 2-2-0 mark in SoCon games. The Cougars have scored 10 goals while conceding 19 in the 11 games this season. Sarah Cardamone has three goals and four assists this year to headline the CofC attack.
The Citadel is 3-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the SoCon, playing host to Davidson on Thursday evening in Charleston. The Bulldogs downed Wofford 3-1 and took a 1-1 draw at Elon to earn their first points of the league season. Mariana Garcia has seven goals to rank second in the SoCon in scoring.
Following this weekend’s games the Eagles go back on the road for a pair of games at Elon and UNCG on October 12th and 14th before returning home for the final three regular season games of the 2012 campaign.
