Eagle Golf Leads ODU/OBX Invitational after Round Two

POWELLS POINT, N.C. – The Georgia Southern golf team continues to lead the Old Dominion Outer Banks Invitational after posting a 287 in the second round of the 54-hole tournament Monday at Kilmaric Golf Course.
The Eagles will carry a five-stroke lead over Radford, which fired a 283 today, into tomorrow's final round. Old Dominion is third, seven strokes behind GSU, after shooting a 289 today, while Virginia Commonwealth and Richmond are tied for fourth and nine strokes off the lead.
"We battled back after another tough start for the guys today," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "They hung in there and posted a solid round. We look forward to a good battle tomorrow, and hopefully, we can put in our best round of the week."
Scott Wolfes followed his 66 in the opening round with a 71 today and is tied for first with Radford's Weston Eklund at 7-under for the tournament. The sophomore got off to a slow start but heated up after the turn and played the back nine 2-under. He posted three birdies on the back nine and has played those holes at 7-under for the tournament.
Charlie Martin is tied for seventh after leading the Eagles with a 70 today. The sophomore played a clean front nine, posting a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole. He had three birdies and two bogeys on the back and is 1-under for the tournament.
"Scott did a good job managing his game today even though he didn't have his best stuff," said Mays, "and Charlie gave us a good effort with a 70."
Hayden Anderson shot a 71 and moved into a tie for 15th. The junior played the back nine 3-under par, eagling the par-5 12th hole and following that with a birdie on the par-3 13th. He is 3-over for the tournament.
"I'm proud of Hayden for getting it back under par after bogeying the first three holes," said Mays.
Junior Will Evans was 1-over through the first 16 holes after getting a birdie on 16 but doubled 17 to finish with a 75.
Matt Mierzejewski struggled through the first six holes with three double bogeys, but the sophomore birdied hole 8 and got going a little bit, playing the back nine 1-over and finishing with a 79.
The tournament concludes tomorrow, and the Eagles are slated to go off hole 1 at 8 a.m.
