STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern dropped its fourth-straight match on Friday evening in the first night game in program history at Eagle Field to Furman, 2-0.
“It was a hard-fought loss to a very good Furman team, they capitalized on the offensive opportunities tonight,” said head coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel. “I was proud of our team’s effort, fighting to the 90th minute and I thought we were a little unlucky not to get one on the scoreboard tonight. A loss is a loss and we turn our attention now to Wofford on Sunday.”
Furman established a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute as India Robinson fed Caitlin Shelton with a one-two pass. The play from the top of the box allowed Shelton to gain space and shoot across the face of goal from 15 yards.
The Paladins doubled the advantage mid-way through the second half as two attackers got in behind the Georgia Southern defense. Stephanie DaVita used a pass inside the six to set up the shot from close range and take a 2-0 lead.
Southern had chances late, laying siege to the Furman goal in the final 10 minutes. GSU had nine second half shots with four on frame to try and battle back into the match. Overall, Furman outshot the Eagles 17-13 with a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal.
The Eagles fall to 6-7-4 on the year and 2-6-1 in Southern Conference play. Southern now trails The Citadel by three points for the final SoCon Tournament berth following the Bulldogs’ 3-2 win over Appalachian State on Friday. Western Carolina is one point ahead of the Eagles entering the final two rounds of league play. Furman improves to 12-3-2 on the year with a 5-2-2 mark in SoCon games.
The Eagles honor their 2012 seniors on Sunday prior to the 2 p.m. match against Wofford. GSU closes the 2012 regular season on Wednesday night against Davidson at 7 p.m. from Eagle Field.
