Eagle Volleyball Hosts Two SoCon Opponents This Weekend

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern volleyball team returns to action this weekend as the Eagles host a pair of Southern Conference North Division opponents.
The Eagles will take on UNCG Saturday at 1 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse before hosting Elon at 2 p.m. Sunday in their annual Dig Pink match, which raises money and awareness in support of a cure for breast cancer.
Georgia Southern sits in second place in the SoCon South Division and has won its last two matches. The Eagles are coming off a 3-0 victory at Davidson Monday. GSU ranks 22nd in the country and second in the league in digs, averaging 17.41 as a team, and Kate Van Dyke ranks 29th in the country in assists with 11.22 per set.
Meredith Paskert leads the team in kills with 244, and Moriah Bellissimo has 208. Alexandra Beecher leads the squad in digs with 352.
The Eagles are 12-14 in the all-time series against UNCG (10-8, 4-2), but the Spartans are 4-1 against GSU in the last five, including a 3-2 victory in the only meeting of 2011. UNCG is 3-2 in its last five matches this season and is coming off consecutive wins over Chattanooga (3-1) and South Carolina State (3-0). Karrian Chambers leads the Spartans in kills with 215, and Olivia Humphries has 212.
Elon (9-12, 2-4) is 2-2 in its last four and will play at Davidson Friday night before traveling to Georgia Southern. The Phoenix are coming off a 3-0 home setback to Samford last Saturday. Megan Gravely leads the Phoenix in kills with 216, and Kris Harris has 153.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink to Sunday's match against the Phoenix. ZTA will operate a "Think Pink, Drink Pink" lemonade stand and will be accepting donations in support of a cure for breast cancer. Prizes include two $50 Tantastic gift certificates and a $25 gift certificate to Cheeky's Lingerie & Swimwear.
Following the two matches this weekend, the Eagles open a four-match road swing at North Division leader Samford Oct. 20.
