STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Women's Soccer plays host to a big weekend of Southern Conference matches this weekend against UNCG and Elon at Eagle Field on Friday afternoon (4 p.m.) and Sunday afternoon (2 p.m.). The matches will be the first home conference matches of the season as league play hits a fever pitch.
Georgia Southern will look to rebound this weekend after dropping consecutive road matches to open league play at Wofford and Furman. Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored her fourth goal of the season in the 30th minute at Wofford, but two late Terrier goals stole the match for the hosts. Against Furman, senior Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) scored late to cut the Furman advantage to 4-1.
Last season, Georgia Southern won its home opener with a 3-0 win over Wofford to open league play at the friendly confines. For that trend to continue, the Eagles will have to get past a Spartans' side that had its 16-game SoCon winning streak snapped on Monday afternoon against Samford. Kristin Player scored two goals and had three assists in the league opener for UNCG against Chattanooga to pick up league Player of the Week honors. UNCG is 2-7 on the season with matches against Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Duke.
Elon travels to Davidson on Friday night before making the trek to Statesboro for Sunday's contest. The Phoenix took an 8-2 win over Chattanooga in their last outing with four goals in each half to take the victory. They are 3-4-3 overall with an 1-0-1 league record. Elon hasn't lost in its last four outings, dating back to a loss against North Florida on Sept. 9th.
Last season, Georgia Southern grabbed a 2-1 victory at Elon in the corresponding fixture. Alex Murphy scored a goal in the eighth minute, but the Phoenix netted an equalizer at the 20 minute mark. Morgan Springer posted the game-winning goal just before the hour mark off an assist by Lindsay Hammer.
The weekend doubleheader opens a span of four-straight home games that concludes next weekend against Western Carolina and Appalachian State.
