Paladins Down Eagles, 4-1

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Georgia Southern Women's Soccer close out its first round of Southern Conference games with a 4-1 loss at Furman on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles could not recover from three first half Paladin goals and fall to 0-2 in league play.
Furman (7-4-0, 2-0 SoCon) took first blood, scoring the match's first goal after just 30 seconds. Anna Shea shot a loose ball from 15 yards out into the net for her second goal of the season and an early 1-0 Paladin advantage.
The Paladins added two more first half goals in the 29th and 32nd minutes. Rachel Shelnutt scored her fifth goal off an assist by Kristin Fennegan to make the score 2-0, while Shea scored her second goal of the match three minutes later.
Five minutes into the second half, Shelnutt added her second goal of the afternoon to put the Paladins ahead, 4-0.
Georgia Southern (2-6-1, 0-2 SoCon) scored just before the hour mark with Emily Archer's (Cornelius, N.C.) first goal with the Eagles. McKenna Storey (Medford, Ore.) found the Eagle attacker on the right side of the penalty area, which allowed Archer to score and make the margin, 4-1.
Georgia Southern outshot the Paladins 14-11 overall with a 10-2 advantage in the second half. The Georgia Southern goalkeepers made two saves to the Paladins' six.
The Eagles open a four-game homestand on Friday, September 30th against UNC Greensboro at 4 p.m. The Eagles also face Elon on Sunday, October 2nd at 2 p.m.
