The Eagles held a slim one stroke lead after entering the clubhouse at even par on Friday and then rallied late Saturday to finish at 1-under par following a slow start to the round. Georgia Southern entered Sunday three shots back in fourth place.
The Eagles put together a third consecutive solid round on the final day to finish 3-under for the round and 4-under for the weekend, but Middle Tennessee State was able to hold on late to secure the title. The Blue Raider's Hunter Green finished at 8-under par to win individual honors.
Senior Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.) shot 4-under par for the weekend (70+71+68=209) to place fifth among individuals while freshman Scott Wolfes (St. Simons Island, Ga.) finished one stroke back and tied for sixth (69+71+70=210). Sophomore Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot the low round of the weekend for the Eagles on Saturday when he carded a 4-under 67. Anderson finished in a tie for 17th (75-67-72=214), while freshman Charlie Martin (LaGrange, Ga.) finished one stroke back in 21st place (70+74+71=215).
"I'm really proud of our team's effort this weekend," said Head Coach Larry Mays. "Having four guys finish in the top 21 including two in the top six shows how well we played. I really like the positive energy we have going and I look forward to taking it with us next weekend to Durham."
The fall schedule will continue for the Eagles on Saturday, October 1 when they travel to Durham, N.C. for the Rod Myers Invitational. The 54-hole event will take place at the par-72, 7,036 yard course located at the Duke University Golf Club.
