Women's Soccer Travels for SoCon Opening Weekend

STATESBORO, Ga. - After earning a home win against USC Upstate to close non-conference play, Georgia Southern Women's Soccer travels to South Carolina's Upstate for a pair of matches at Wofford and Furman on Friday and Sunday. The Eagles open Southern Conference play against Wofford on Friday, September 23rd, at 6 p.m. and close the weekend doubleheader at Furman on Sunday, September 25th, at 2 p.m.
The Eagles (2-4-1) closed out the opening stanza of the season with a convincing 2-0 win over USC Upstate at Eagle Field. Senior captain Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) opened the scoring in the 16th minute with her second goal of the season while Carlee Storey (Medford, Ore.) scored an insurance goal in the 56th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kailey Kiefus (North Tustin, Calif.) recorded her first shutout with the Eagles between the pipes against the Spartans by holding the visitors scoreless. She made one save on six total Spartan shots.
Courtney Collins (Mason, Ohio) and Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) lead the Eagles in scoring with three goals each. Oland, the 2010 Eagle scoring leader with nine goals, follows in third place with two goals.
Wofford enters Friday's SoCon opener with a spotless 6-0 mark with four wins at home this season. The Terriers have scored 22 goals while allowing just one. They have not conceded a goal in their last 474 minutes, dating back to the season opener against ETSU. Wofford is led in scoring by Emily Bougas with eight goals. Friday's match will be the first for Wofford since September 11th.
Sunday's foe, Furman, enters league play with a 5-4 record and plays host to Davidson on Friday night. Rachel Shelnutt and Hannah Stanifer have three goals each for the Paladins, who defeated Stetson in their last outing, 2-0.
