McLean, Va. - Georgia Southern currently ranks 31st in the men's standings for the Capital One Cup in the latest Capital One Financial Corporation standings released today, April 13th. The Eagles are tied with Virginia with 16 points while Auburn leads the Men's standings with 70 points. The Capital One Cup, in its inaugural year, is a program rewarding NCAA Division I athletic programs for their cumulative on-field performance across multiple men's and women's sports.
Georgia Southern is one of only two schools to represent the state of Georgia of 63 men's athletic programs listed. University of Georgia, with two points after the winter season, is in a tie for 58th place. The Eagles gained points from the football program's semifinalist appearance in the 2011 Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs.
One of more than 300 Division I athletic programs competing to win the Capital One Cup trophy, teams are eligible to receive $200,000 to fund graduate scholarships for student-athletes. One men's and one women's Capital One Cup winner will be determined at the end of the spring season and honored at the ESPY Awards in July, which will be televised live by ESPN.
