STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Golf competes outside the Sunshine State for the first time this spring, traveling to Aiken, S.C., for the 14th annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate March 7-8th. This will be the Eagles' second-straight year participating in the 18-team field after an 11-year hiatus from the tournament.
The tournament, held at the Palmetto Golf Club, the fourth-oldest golf course in the United States, will feature the first two rounds of play on Monday and conclude with the final round on Tuesday, March 8. The 6,565-yard, par-70 golf course will play host to a field that features Akron, Alabama, Chattanooga, Clemson, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Elon, Francis Marion, Furman, Georgia Southern, Kentucky, Liberty, Maryland, Presbyterian, USC Aiken, Wofford, Vanderbilt and Virginia.
Chattanooga carded a cumulative team score of 855 to earn the overall team victory in the 2010 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. The Mocs have won the tournament two of the last three years (2008 and 2010).
Virginia's Ben Kohles followed up his tournament record-breaking 63 in the second round with a two-over 72 in the third round last year. Kohles' 205 total (70-63-72) helped him beat Liberty's Robert Karlsson (208) by three strokes for individual medalist honors at the 13th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. Karlsson was the individual champion in the event in 2009.
Prior to this year, GSU had participated in the Palmetto Intercollegiate twice, competing in 2010 and as part of the inaugural field in 1998. Last year, the Eagles posted an 872 tournament-total to tie for sixth place. Joe Monte led GSU, firing an 8-over 218 to finish in a tie for 17th place. Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) and Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) both recorded top-30 finishes with Sander finishing in a tie for 22nd (73-74-73=220) and Deal concluding the tournament in a 30th-place tie (74-73-74=221).
Sander and Deal will be the only returners from last year's lineup, joined by Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.), Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.).
