CLEMSON, Ga. - Georgia Southern Track & Field scored four top-3 finishes to highlight the Eagles' first meet of the indoor season at the annual Orange & Purple Winter Classic on Saturday. Multiple schools from the Southeast region competed at this year's event.
"We set several personal bests and some school records today and had a great showing by our newcomers," said Head Coach Marlo Mincey. "Today was a good start to the season for us. There are still some things we need to work on, but I am very pleased with our team's effort today."
Sophomore Asea Mayfield (Marietta, Ga.) placed second in the 1000m Run (3:03.20) for the high finish of the day for the Eagles. In the same event, senior Azura Robillard (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) finished eighth (3:16.03) and junior Talisha Rice (Stockbridge, Ga.) ran to a ninth-place (3:16.07) finish.
Junior Jasmine Billings (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and sophomore Stephanie Hicks (Trenton, N.J.) tied for third-place (8.76) in the 60m Hurdles. In the preliminaries, Billings clocked an 8.55 qualifying time which is the second fastest time in school history. The 8.76 time recorded by both runners in the finals ties for the fourth fastest in school history and was a personal best for Hicks.
In other track events, junior Ebony Carter (Rome, Ga.) ran a personal best in the 60m Dash (7.67) to finish in seventh-place, followed by freshman Jasmine Walker (Fairburn, Ga.) who placed 11th (7.75).
Freshman Kimberly Thomas (Covington, Ga.) finished in 11th place (41.62) in the 300m Dash and junior Kristiana Towns (Decatur, Ga.) finished in 16th place (1:20.47) in the 500m Dash to earn high finisher honors in each event for the Eagles.
In the Mile Run, senior Azura Robillard (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) was the high Eagle finisher in 12th place (6:02.24) and in the 4X400 Meter Relay, the team of Cherrelle King (Elmont, N.Y.), Carter, Mayfield and Thomas sprinted to a seventh-place (4:02.53) finish.
In field events, freshman Sara Hall (Columbia, Mo.) paced the Eagles with a third-place (12.49m) finish in the Shot Put and an eighth-place (12.81m) finish in the Weight Throw.
Freshman Alexis Jacobs (Columbia, S.C.) placed seventh (11.88m) in the Shot Put and Hicks placed seventh in the Long Jump (5.22m) to round out the top-10 finishes for the Eagles.
Georgia Southern Track and Field returns to action Jan. 12-13 when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama for the Blazer Invitational.
