Eagles Continue SoCon Run Against College of Charleston

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Women's Soccer returns to the scene of its upset of No. 2 seeded UNCG in the semifinal round of the 2011 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Tournament. The Eagles face the No. 3 seeded College of Charleston Cougars with a trip to the SoCon Tournament Final in the balance. The match can be seen live, free of charge, on SoConSports.com.
Georgia Southern improved to 8-10-2 overall with the 2-1 win over UNCG in the first round of the tournament last weekend. Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) took three shots and scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute. In the match, McKenna Storey (Medford, Ore.) scored her first goal of the season off an assist by her sister, Carlee Storey (Medford, Ore.).
GSU's final home match of the season was against the Cougars, a 2-1 defeat at Eagle Field on Senior Day. Oland tallied the goal for the Eagles while Hope Atkinson and Haley Hutchens scored the decisive goals for the Cougars.
Junior Courtney Collins (Mason, Ohio) leads the Eagles with seven goals this season, followed closely by sophomore Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) at six goals on the campaign. Goalkeeper Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.) has been stellar between the pipes, recording 73 saves including five last week at UNCG. She has held opponents to a 1.20 goals against average while the GSU offense has produced 23 total goals.
The Cougars downed Elon, 3-0, to open the postseason at Patriots Point last Sunday with two goals from Atkinson, who leads the team with eight. Sarah Schaidle ranks second on the team with seven goals and three assists. A major threat from the Charleston midfield is Sarah Cardamone with three goals and eight assists on the season.
With a win, Georgia Southern would advance to its first SoCon Final since 1996 when the Eagles lost, 1-0, to Davidson in the Championship game.
