Volleyball Closes Regular Season in South Carolina

STATESBORO, Ga. - Riding a three-match win streak, the Georgia Southern Volleyball team (17-13, 9-5) closes out the regular season with two games in the state of South Carolina. The Eagles play Furman and Wofford Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both matches take place at 6 p.m.
Fans attending the 1 p.m. football game on the campus of Wofford are invited to travel to nearby Converse College to support the Eagles in their regular-season finale. GSU's season is not over. The Eagles are set to defend its 2010 Southern Conference Tournament Title next weekend in Birmingham, Ala. Samford is hosting the 2011 incarnation of the tournament on November 19-21st.
The Eagles have won three-straight matches behind setter's Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) back-to-back 49 assist performances. Van Dyke was honored as the SoCon's Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance last week and in the classroom.
Last time out Georgia Southern swept the Davidson Wildcats 25-15, 25-15, 26-24 for the three sets to none match win. Behind 18 kills from Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) and 49 assists from Van Dyke, GSU won its ninth league victory by hitting .323 and holding Davidson to a .153 mark.
The Eagles hit .432 against the Wildcats in the opening set to run away with a 25-15 first set win and won by the same score in the second set after hitting .289. The Eagles staved off the Wildcats rally, 26-24, in the third set to complete the sweep.
Furman currently occupies second place in the south division with an 11-3 conference record. The Paladins are winners of six of their last seven matches with their only loss coming at division leader College of Charleston. GSU won the first match up in Statesboro 3-0 earlier this year, but Furman leads the all-time series 28-17.
Wofford is fifth in the division with a 2-12 record and owns a 3-5 mark in home contests this year. The Eagles won the earlier meeting in Old Hanner Gym 3-1 back on September 22nd. Sanford and Meredith Paskert (Brecksville, Ohio) both tallied double-digit kills in the match.
