Eagles Open SoCon Tournament Against UNCG

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Women's Soccer makes its triumphant return to postseason play on Sunday afternoon at UNCG. The Eagles face the Spartans in the first round of the 2011 Southern Conference Tournament starting at 2 p.m. from the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The seventh seed in the tournament, Georgia Southern has a 7-10-2 overall record and a 4-6-1 mark in league play. Junior Courtney Collins (Mason, Ohio) scored one of her seven goals this season in the September 30th meeting between GSU and UNCG. The Eagles fell, 2-1 in the contest which saw the Spartans erase a second half Georgia Southern advantage with goals in the 76th and 88th minutes.
Sophomore Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) has six goals this season and ranks second on the Georgia Southern squad, scoring all her goals off the bench. Senior Sara Oland (Evans, Ohio) has three goals with seven assists.
Goalkeeper Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.) has been a stabilizing force for the Georgia Southern defense, making 68 saves including a career high 11 against College of Charleston. Merson has four shutouts this season and is holding opponents to an 1.21 goals against average. Kristin Player scored one of her team-high eight goals in the meeting earlier this season between GSU and UNCG.
With a victory against the Spartans, Georgia Southern will advance to face the winner of the other quarterfinal match between College of Charleston and Elon at 7:30 on Friday, November 4th. The semifinal and final rounds of the Southern Conference Tournament are being held at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.
