STATESBORO, Ga. – A balanced offense from the Georgia Southern Volleyball team propelled the Eagles over South Carolina State 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-19) Tuesday evening in Hanner Fieldhouse. Georgia Southern, who won its eighth straight match, improved to 11-6 overall.
Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) registered eight kills to lead the Eagle offense that collected 35 kills and recorded a .281 hitting percentage. Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) and Nicole Jeschelnik (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) combined for 10 kills, five each, without errors. Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) had 30 assists to fuel the offense, while Ashley Roe (Campbell, Calif.) turned in a match-high 18 digs.
Sanford collected four of her 10 kills in the first frame leading Georgia Southern to a 25-15 opening set victory. SCSU was limited to a .100 hitting percentage on nine kills and six attack errors. The Eagles quickly jumped out to a 10-5 lead and never looked back to gain the early match advantage.
A second set 25-18 win put Georgia Southern on top 2-0 in the match. The Eagles used 12 kills and two blocks to capture the set. Hannah Nelson (Norcross, Ga.) posted four kills and helped Georgia Southern hold SCSU to a .077 hitting percentage. Georgia Southern took its final lead of the set at 2-1 and led by as many as nine points in the frame.
The third set witnessed the most competitive action with two lead changes and three tied scores. The Bulldogs held the lead the majority of the match, jumping out to a 9-3 advantage. Georgia Southern climbed back, knotting the score at 18-18 and closed the set on a 9-1 run to claim the match with a 25-19 third set win. Small led with four kills in the frame.
“We tried to get a couple new faces on the court this evening to get them some experience and have them feel a little more comfortable should we need to rely on them later down the road,” said Head Coach Chad Callihan. “Anytime you make some changes, you'll lose a little chemistry and it just took us a second to get things going. I give credit to South Carolina State, they did some nice things in the third set.”
