Volleyball Defeats Elon 3-1 in Semifinal Round

Boone, N.C. – For the second-straight night, the Eagle volleyball team used a powerful defensive performance to earn a win in the 2010 Southern Conference Volleyball Championship, defeating the No. 1 seed from the North Division, Elon 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-11, 25-18) in the semifinals.
“Tonight was a hard fought match against a strong and disciplined Elon team,” said Georgia Southern head coach Chad Callihan. “We were able to receive serves well and transition enough attacks against a very stout defense.”
Georgia Southern advances to face College of Charleston Sunday at 2 p.m. for the 2010 Southern Conference Championship title.
“We knew this match would have a different style from the match yesterday,” Callihan added, “and it took us a while to adjust to the length of the rallies and how many balls Elon kept alive. I am very proud of our young group for keeping their composure and coming out with a great effort in the third and fourth sets.”
The Eagles had five players record double figures in digs, led by junior libero Ashley Roe (Campbell, Calif.), who turned in 22. Junior middle hitter Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) led GSU with seven block assists and two solo blocks, adding eight kills, while hitters senior Sarah Gildersleeve (Naples, Fla.) and junior Hannah Nelson (Norcross, Ga.), who combined for 15 block assists in Friday night's match, each posted six block assists.
Elon was held to .051 at the net as the Eagles forced 32 attack errors and held the Phoenix's top two hitters to a combined 19 kills.
Junior outside hitter Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) led GSU offensively with 16 kills, followed by Gildersleeve's nine kills and three Eagles who each tallied eight. Sophomore setter Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) dished out 43 assists with an additional 12 digs.
“Bethany [Sanford] has done very well for us in both matches and she really anchored our offense coming up with critical kills time after time,” noted Callihan. “Sarah [Gildersleeve] has done a great job closing our block and providing timely hitting from the middles hitter position.
