Eagles Win 3-1 at Samford To Finish Regular Season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In a match dominated by defense, the Georgia Southern volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-21, 25-20) victory on the road at Samford to finish 14-2 in Southern Conference play. The Eagles' 24-win total ranks as the fourth-highest single-season mark in history.
Junior hitters Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) and Hannah Nelson (Norcross, Ga.) each reached double figures in kills for the Eagles, tallying 14 and 13, respectively. Sophomore setter Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) handed out 39 assists, adding a team-high 11 digs, and was one of four Eagles with two block assists. GSU (24-8) recorded six total blocks on the night, with Sanford and sophomore hitter Moriah Bellissimo (Blackstone, Va.) each posting a block solo.
Samford (14-16, 8-8 SoCon) tallied 13 of the 19 total blocks in the match.
Georgia Southern held Samford to .142 at the net, but hit just .167 on its own side, led by Nelson's .290.
Set One: Georgia Southern 25, Samford 20
Back-to-back kills from Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) broke a 17-17 stalemate and provided the momentum the Eagles needed as GSU scored eight of the final 11 points of the opening frame to win 25-20.
Georgia Southern held the Bulldogs to a .000 hitting percentage, while Sanford rattled off a team-high five kills and hit .333 herself.
Set Two: Samford 25, Georgia Southern 15
Samford controlled the second set, running the score to 11-2 to open the game. The Eagles strung together small scoring rallies, but the effort was not enough as the Bulldogs evened the match at one-all with a 25-15 set two win.
Nelson posted a five kills in the frame, but GSU couldn't overcome a powerful Samford offense that hit .348 and a defense that provided five total blocks.
Set Three: Georgia Southern 25, Samford 21
Despite trailing by as many as seven in the early goings, Georgia Southern used a 10-4 scoring drive to rally and take a 2-0 match advantage with a 25-21 win in the third frame.
Sanford added five kills to her ledger in the third game.
Set Four: Georgia Southern 25, Samford 20
The Eagles trailed early again in the fourth game, but rattled off four-straight points to turn a 4-6 deficit into an 8-6 lead and never looked back, closing out the set and the match with a 25-20 final score.
Nelson tallied five kills and Sanford another four to lead the Eagles in the win. The Bulldogs posted five blocks in the game, holding Eagle hitters to .229 at the net.
