Eagle Golf Looks to Keep Momentum Going into Final Round

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Georgia Southern Golf team battled back from a challenging first round to card a second-round 289 for 10th place after the first day of play at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate. Virginia leads both the team and individual standings in the tournament. The Eagles look to take the strong play from late in the day's competition to tomorrow's final round at the Old Memorial Golf Club, a par-72, 7,400-yard course in Tampa, Fla.
"Obviously we didn't get off to the start we wanted," said Head Coach Larry Mays. "We made some mistakes and put up a bad round. I'm proud of the guys coming back with a better second round. Hopefully the momentum from the second round will carry over to our final round tomorrow."
Leading the charge was senior Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) who fired a second-round 71, just one stroke off his career-low set at last year's Administaff Augusta State Invitational. Deal's two-round 146 places him in 27th overall.
Senior Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) is two strokes behind Deal, in 31st place (75-73=148). Lewis Gruber's even-par 72 in the second round helped the Tallahassee, Fla., native move into a tie for 36th place (78-72=150).
Sophomore Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) fired an eagle in his second straight tournament and is tied for 48th with a 152. Drew Guffey (Bartow, Fla.) one stroke back from Sander, is in a tie for 51st. Competing as an individual, freshman Thomas Sharkey (Helensburgh, Scotland) recorded a two-round 160.
The final round of competition begins at 7:50 a.m. Sunday morning. Georgia Southern, paired with Kentucky and South Florida, will begin the final round on the 10th hole at 8:50 a.m.
