Eagles Handle Wildcats, 3-0

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Extending its win streak to four matches, the Georgia Southern Volleyball team opened this three-match road swing with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-23) sweep over Davidson Thursday night (October 21). The win pushed the Eagles to 16-7 overall and 7-1 in Southern Conference play, while the Wildcats fell to 13-12, 4-4.
Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) reeled off 13 kills to lead the Eagle offense, while sophomore setter Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) posted 27 assists. Junior Ashley Roe (Campbell, Calif.) led the backcourt with 10 digs.
Sanford ripped six kills and hit .667 in the opening frame to lead Georgia Southern to a 26-24 victory. The conference teams worked through 13 ties and five lead changes in the first set with the Eagles taking the opening frame. Davidson took a 14-10 lead, but Georgia Southern knotted the score at 16-16. A Wildcat attack error handed the Eagles a 21-19 advantage, but the teams worked through three more ties before kills from Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) and Van Dyke sealed the set.
The Eagles hit a team-best .320 in the second set gaining a 2-0 match lead with a 25-19 win. Sanford combined with Nicole Jeschelnik (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) for eight kills in the second frame. Georgia Southern jumped out with a 4-1 lead before Davidson tied the score at 7-7 and took the lead, 9-7. The Eagles responded with a 5-0 run to reverse the lead and after a kill from Davidson's Sarabeth Peele, Georgia Southern unloaded five unanswered points for an 18-11 lead. Jeschelnik secured the win with a kill at 25-19.
Carrying the momentum from the second set, Georgia Southern opened the third frame with a 7-0 run. The Wildcats climbed back to within three points at 15-12, but the Eagles extended their lead, pulling out with a 19-14 advantage. Davidson made it a two-point game at 23-21 and fought off two match points before a Wildcat service error handed the Eagles a 25-23 win.
Georgia Southern continues this three-match road trip traveling to Western Carolina on Friday, October 22. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. The Eagles close out the road trip at Appalachian State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
