BATON ROUGE, La. - Consistent play by freshman Will Evans (McDonough, Ga.) and senior Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) on the final 18 holes helped Georgia Southern move ahead of Rice University and finish nine strokes behind 11th-place UAB to cap off the fall season at the David Toms Intercollegiate. LSU's Austin Gutgsell finished first in the individual standings and helped the Tigers win their own tournament by finishing two strokes ahead of Arkansas at the par-72 6,849 yard Country Club of Louisiana.
On the final and toughest round of the tournament that saw the course play to a stroke average of 74.92, three Eagles battled to gain position in the individual standings. Evans and Deal both climbed four spots to their respective finishes. Evans birdied three holes in his final 18 holes to close the round with a 72, which led to a tie for 29th. Deal, who was tied for second out of the field in par-3 scoring (-2), fired two birdies on par-3s and carded another pair on the final nine holes to finish the day with an even-par 72 for a tie for 41st.
Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) moved up to a tie for 54th place finish after shooting two birdies following the turn to sign for a 3-over 75. Other players who competed for the Eagles were Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Thomas Sharkey (Helensburgh, Scotland).
The Georgia Southern Golf team will use the break to start preparations for the spring season, which begins February 12, 2011, when the Eagles travel for the 11th consecutive time to Gainesville, Fla., for the Gator Invitational.
