STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Women's Soccer team fell by a 2-1 margin Thursday afternoon (October 14) to Southern Conference foe The Citadel. Junior Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) tallied her eighth goal of the season in the defeat. Georgia Southern fell to 5-9-0 overall and 2-5-0 in league play and will look to rebound at College of Charleston on Sunday.
The Eagles went into Thursday's match looking to snap a two-match losing streak and looked to be on track when Oland deposited her eighth goal of the season into the back of the net less than eight minutes into the contest. Katy Phillips (Ocala, Fla.) delivered a cross pass to the left side and Oland was in position to put Georgia Southern in front with the goal.
Georgia Southern maintained the lead the majority of the first half, but in the 35th minute, Bulldog Mariana Garcia delivered the equalizer off a throw in at the near post, unassisted. The Eagles took two more shots in the remaining minutes of the opening half, but could not register a shot on goal as the teams headed to the locker room tied at 1-all.
Approaching the 12th minute in the second half, Garcia picked up her second goal of the contest to put The Citadel in front, 2-1. Garcia released a shot down the middle for her eighth goal of the season.
Georgia Southern took eight shots in the second half and McKenna Storey (Medford, Ore.) took the Eagles' last shot of the contest at 87:35, but was unable to knot the score as The Citadel sealed the win.
