Eagles Prepare for SoCon Tournament

STATESBORO, GA ? The 73rd Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship is set to begin Sunday, April 19 and run through Tuesday, April 21 at the Country Club of South Carolina. The tournament returns to the par 72, 7,062-yard course for the third straight year as the Eagles look to capture their third league championship.
With the regular season concluded, which witnessed three tournament crowns and two individualist honors by sophomore Logan Blondell, the Eagles will use the same positive momentum heading into the tournament . “Obviously we're going over there wanting to compete for a championship. It's been one of our goals all year. We peaked at the right time and played well at the end of the season. I think we've been building towards that all year,” said head coach Larry Mays.
The tournament field will feature 10 SoCon schools including (Golfstat ranking): Appalachian State (198), College of Charleston (151), Chattanooga (31), Davidson (174), Elon (183), Furman (129), Georgia Southern (54), UNC Greensboro (123), Western Carolina (139), and the tournament host, Wofford (152).
Chattanooga will be looking for its third straight league title after taking the crown in 2008 with an eight-stroke lead over College of Charleston. Georgia Southern captured the league title in 2003 and 2006 under the guidance of Mays.
The Eagles enter the tournament looking for consistency from all five players for the three rounds, with one round of 18 played each day. “I think that if we can get all guys playing well at the same time I think we're going to be a dangerous team going both into conference and into NCAA Regionals. There isn't any reason that if we're all playing well we can't compete to the last days of college golf,” said Mays.
In addition to the tournament title, a birth to the NCAA Regionals is on the line for the competing schools. Georgia Southern, a familiar face in the Regionals, has had nine team and individual regional appearances.
Competing in the five-man lineup for Georgia Southern is Logan Blondell, Drew Lethem, Joe Monte, Spencer Fulford and Ryan LeFevre.
“We've adopted this semester clocking in and going to work each round and that's something that is my job to make sure that we do,” stated Mays. “I think that last round in Augusta was a good little wake up call for us that everything can be going smooth, but if you lose your focus just for a minute, it can slide pretty hard. That woke us back up.
We had a good bit of practice going into this tournament and hopefully we can go over there and show our true colors.”
