Eagle Volleyball Returns to Conference Play Hosting Two League Foes

STATESBORO, GA – After a short break from league play earlier this week, the Georgia Southern volleyball team returns to Southern Conference action this weekend, hosting The Citadel and College of Charleston in Hanner Fieldhouse. Match times on Friday and Saturday are set for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
Georgia Southern struck .350 from the floor in a non-conference sweep over North Florida this past Tuesday (Oct. 6). The win pushed the Eagles to a 12-6 overall mark on the year and enter weekend competition with a 2-1 conference ledger. Taking command of the match, the Eagles held the Osprey to .151 hitting on the night, while hitting .350. Georgia Southern evenly dispensed the offensive attack, as four Eagles contributed a combined 33 kills of the team's 45.
For the season, Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) paces the Eagles with 234 kills, while owning 185 digs. Senior libero Cristin Haines (Palos Heights, Ill.) leads the defensive end with 239 digs, while freshman setter Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) holds 701 assists.
Coming off a 3-1 loss to Furman, The Citadel enters Friday night's match standing at 3-16 overall this season and 0-4 in SoCon action. Tatum Jestila recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs against the Paladins. For the season, Jestile leads the Bulldogs with 173 kills and 164 digs on the year, while Alyssa Holum owns 471 assists.
Entering Saturday's match with a 7-9 overall mark, College of Charleston currently stands in second place of the SoCon South Division standings with a 3-1 league record. Going 2-1 in this past week's action, the Cougars captured 3-0 wins over The Citadel and Wofford, while dropping a 3-1 loss to Furman. On the season, Emily Swain leads the team averaging 2.55 kills, while Paige Johnson leads the defense averaging a team-best 3.87 digs.
College of Charleston holds the all-time series advantage over Georgia Southern, 26-8, along with an 11-match win streak that dates back to October 29, 2004. The Eagles will look to continue a 21-match win streak over The Citadel as Georgia Southern remains undefeated against the Bulldogs in program history.
Season tickets for the 2009 Georgia Southern volleyball season are on sale at $15 for a general admission pass. A family plan, which includes two adult passes and two children passes, can be purchased for only $35. Single-game tickets are priced at $5 for an adult and $1 for youth (ages 3-12).
