Zabroske Ties for Second as Eagles Take Fifth at Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate

POOLER, GA – Earning his third 'Top-5' finish of the 2009 fall campaign, senior Ryan Zabroske jumped six spots on the individual leaderboard to finish runner-up alongside Furman's Daniel Bowden at the 2009 Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate (October 20). Zabroske fired a 69 over the final 18 holes to complete a tournament total 211 at 5-under par at Savannah Quarters Country Club, a par 72, 7,016 yard Greg Norman designed course. For the tournament, the Georgia Southern golf team took fifth place with an aggregated 875 (+11).
“The tournament was a huge success; we had excellent weather and the course was in perfect shape,” said head coach Larry Mays. “Savannah Quarters did an excellent job hosting the tournament and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them in the future with this tournament.”
East Carolina University captured the tournament title and took individual medalist honors in David Watkins. The Pirates held onto first place carding a final round 288 for a team total 852 (-12). Watkins followed subsequent rounds of 4-under 68s with a final round 69. Watkins finished the tournament at 11-under 205, a six stroke advantage over runners-up Zabroske and Bowden.
Wofford finished second at 871, while Furman (872) and Old Dominion (873) followed within two strokes to take third and fourth place, respectively. Georgia Southern rounded out the 'Top-5' at 875.
Following an opening day performance carding the low-round, senior Zabroske posted a 3-under 69 to complete the tournament. The Alpharetta, Ga., native wrapped up the tournament at 5-under par 211 with two sub-par rounds. The second-place finish marks his third 'Top-5' finish of the fall campaign.
“The highlight of the tournament was definitely Ryan's [Zabroske] runner-up finish. He played the last eight holes at 5-under to shoot a 69 today,” stated Mays. “He displayed a great performance here to complete a great fall campaign overall.”
Redshirt-freshman Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) shot 2-over on the day to take a share of 19th place at 219. Sander bookended a second round 72 with rounds of 73 and 74, respectively. Finishing tied for 27th, junior Joe Monte (Chantilly, Va.) displayed a consistent performance with three rounds of 74. Monte completed the tournament at 6-over 222.
Standing one stroke behind Monte, senior Spence Fulford carded a final round reminiscent of his second with a 2-over 74. Fulford, who hails from Rocky Mount, N.C., finished in a tie for 32nd at 223. Completing the Eagles' starting five, Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) posted a final round 78 to finish tied for 66th at 232.
Competing as an individual, junior Coleman Calhoun (Vidalia, Ga.) shot a 68 to complete a three-round total 228 to finish in 56th place.
“We posted some good rounds from Ryan and Florian, but overall, this was not the finish we were looking for to end the tournament,” stated Mays as the Eagles concluded their fall schedule with the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate.
“Overall, our fall campaign was highlighted with a few special rounds from Spence, Ryan and Florian. Spence's 63 at SpringHill suites was an impressive round to watch unfold and Ryan finished the fall at 8-under, which is the best finish a player has had during my tenure. Florian was also a pleasant addition to the lineup posting some solid finishes throughout the fall.
“As a team, we had some strong outings, but we know we have work to do,” stated Mays as the Eagles head into the off-season. “We use the fall schedule to guide us into spring competition and we know what needs to be worked on during the off-season to make us a championship caliber team. We have a very challenging spring schedule and with the commitment of the team and coaching staff, we will come out strong in February.”
The Eagles return to the course at the Gator Invitational, February 13-14, 2010.
