Eagles Have Impressive Showing at Irwin Belk Invitational

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? The Georgia Southern track & field team had an impressive showing at the Irwin Belk Invitational on Saturday in Davidson, N.C.
GSU finished first, second and third in the 100m led by Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.), Shamyria Ortiz (Newnan, Ga.) and Tierra Watts (Albany, Ga.). Anthony turned in a time of 12.02, while Ortiz finished in 12.07 and Watts finished in 12.20. Ortiz sprinted across the finish line in 24.60 in the 200m, which was good enough for a second place finish.
Amber Wilson (Calhoun, Ga.) took home a first place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.80. Senior Carla Ballard (Morrow, Ga.) posted a first place finish in the 400m hurdles coming across the finish line in 61.56.
GSU's 4x100m relay team placed first led by Dominique Thurman (Riverdale, Ga.), Watts, Ortiz and Anthony with a time of 46.35. The team of London Ryles (Decatur, Ga.), Shauntel Jennings (Stone Mountain, Ga.), Ashley Bush-Hardy (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Ballard placed first in the 4x400m event.
The Eagles placed first, second and third in both the long and triple jump events led by Lynndsey Hyter (Dallas, Texas.)who placed first in both events. Senior Jennifer Charles (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) won the shot put event, while Jessica Irizarry (Kennesaw, Ga.) took a first place finish in the javelin throw.
The Eagles return to the track next weekend, as they head to Cullowhee, N.C. for the Southern Conference Championships. The meet is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
