Volleyball Edges The Citadel in Four

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Four different Georgia Southern players recorded double-figure kills to give the Eagles a close 3-1 (29-27, 27-25, 17-25, 25-21) win at The Citadel Saturday afternoon at McAlister Field House.
The victory snaps a three-match losing streak. GSU moves to 8-11 overall and 2-3 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel falls to 6-9 and 0-3.
“It was nice to see us rebound after our performance last night,” said Eagles head coach Chad Callihan. “I was really proud of our effort down the stretch in some tight games. It was nice to see us stay composed and continue to play hard regardless of what the score was. We've been in those situations in the past and haven't necessarily fared so well.”
The Eagles held off two set points in set one and one in set two to take a 2-0 lead. Georgia Southern trailed by as many as four points in the second frame.
“I felt like we played well most of the day,” said Callihan. “We made some silly mistakes that kind of made the game close. I really felt like today when we got tight situations score-wise, we focused in well and made the plays when we had to. We had been making plays throughout, we did a really good job of when the game was on the line, minimizing some of the mistakes that plagued us up to that point and executed well.”
After The Citadel claimed set three, Georgia Southern jumped out to a 4-1 lead in set four and never looked back.
Freshman Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) led all players with 18 kills. Fellow freshman Lauren Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.) recorded a career-high 15 kills and classmate Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) added 10 on a .474 attack percentage. Claybaugh and Sanford also notched double-doubles with 19 and 10 digs, respectively. Junior Cristin Haines (Palos Heights, Ill.) also posted 19 digs.
“I thought we had some good passing today and that allowed us to open up the offense,” said Callihan. “Our pin players were a lot more aggressive than they have been and I was wondering if we were wearing down or getting tired with the long season and being young. But we looked athletic out on the pins today and were really flying around and hopefully we can build on that.”
The Eagles return to the court next weekend with matches at Western Carolina Friday and Appalachian State on Sunday.
