Volleyball Loses in Three at Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston used a 10-0 run in the first set to pull away from Georgia Southern to win 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-19) in Southern Conference volleyball action Friday night from John Kresse Arena.
CofC stays perfect in league play and improves to 10-5 overall and 3-0 in the SoCon. GSU drops to 7-11 and 1-3.
“We played a very good Charleston team this evening,” said GSU head coach Chad Callihan. “We could have done some things better but their effort was OK.”
Charleston jumped out to an early 7-2 lead but following a Georgia Southern timeout, the Eagles battled back with five straight points off the serve of freshman Lauren Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.).
But with the score 13-13, the Cougars rattled off 10 consecutive points, the first three off Eagles attack errors.
“I think the tone was set in the first 10 points,” said Callihan. “We did a good job of fighting back to get it to 13-13 but they went on a run and we just weren't able to stop it. Once that happened, the confidence that Charleston played with the rest of the match was pretty tough to overcome.”
From there Charleston never looked back, hitting .571 in the second set alone.
CofC hitters Ginny Phillips and Emily Sawin combined for 21 kills and a .405 attack percentage. The Cougars hit .341 as a squad.
“We just didn't do a very good job of tracking our hitters,” said Callihan. “We didn't do a good job of lining up. The sets were pretty high for them ? we should have had a better opportunity to line up and get some block attempts and dig attempts. After the first two games they were out-digging us 29-11. Credit to Charleston for doing the right things and minimizing their mistakes.”
Freshman Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) led the Eagles with 11 kills.
Georgia Southern returns to action Saturday with a 2 p.m. match at The Citadel.
