Volleyball Road Trip Commences Saturday

STATESBORO, Ga. --- The Georgia Southern volleyball team heads back out on the road to start a four-match road trip starting Saturday at Wofford.
The clash with the Terriers is set to start at 2 p.m. The Eagles face Furman Sunday at 2 p.m.
“We were disappointed in our match on Monday and hopefully we can use that as motivation to get up for this weekend,” said head coach Chad Callihan. “It's a big weekend against two teams in our division and we haven't been on the road in a couple of weeks so it'll be good to get out and compete again and get another streak going.”
Georgia Southern (12-12, 6-4) are looking to start a new winning streak after their five-match run was ended Monday to UNC Greensboro. The streak was the longest by the program since 2004 and the five straight league wins occurred for the first time since 2003.
“We had been struggling all year to find a little chemistry and gain a little confidence and the streak definitely provided both,” said Callihan. “We settled in to a lineup there that was playing quite well and developed some nice cohesion on the court. And with each win our confidence grows. We're a young group and each time we get a win it validates that we can play well at this level.”
After starting the season 8-2, Wofford have slumped to a 12-12 (2-7) record, including losses in six of their last seven matches and a sweep to rival Furman on Wednesday. The Eagles have not lost to the Terriers since 2001, a span of 12 matches.
“They're a competitive team,” said Callihan. “They'll compete well, they play well at home, they've got some good athletes and good players and I expect it to be quite a test. I don't really look at their record; they've had some competitive matches ? five-set matches, taking games off quality teams ? so while they may not be getting the wins that they'd like, I haven't seen any drop off in their competitiveness.”
Furman (13-9, 6-3) enter the weekend ½ game ahead of Georgia Southern in the SoCon South standings.
“They're athletic, long and lean and take up a lot of space with the block,” said Callihan. “They've had a couple of good seasons, they play with confidence and they feel good about what they do. It's a tough gym to play in. They're definitely a good team and one of the top teams in the league right now. They have one or two players where even if they're playing poorly can still carry them to a win.”
