Bacic, Volleyball Sweeps Western Carolina

STATESBORO, Ga. --- Georgia Southern senior Gorana Bacic (Richmond, Va.) had 13 kills and a .750 hitting percentage to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 (30-18, 30-16, 30-25) volleyball win over Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at Hanner Fieldhouse.
The win is GSU's second in three matches and improves their mark to 5-13 overall and 2-4 in the Southern Conference. WCU falls to 7-13 and 2-3.
“Today was a huge match because it was a total team effort, every person was ready to play and gave 100 percent,” said GSU head coach Nicole McCray. “In order for us to finish this season strong, that's what we're going to need.”
Georgia Southern held Western Carolina to a .039 attack percentage as a team, including -.097 in game two. The Eagles hit .278 led by Bacic's career day.
“She did great,” added McCray. “If she can do that consistently in every match we play, we're going to be just fine. She was definitely ready to play but she couldn't have done it if our primary passers didn't pass the ball and if Mae (Chabra) didn't do a great job of setting.”
GSU never trailed in games one and two while compiling a .328 hitting percentage. WCU led by as many as five early in game three, but a 17-6 run completed the sweep.
“We passed much better today,” said McCray. “We didn't really serve as well as we could have in the second game, but Western Carolina is a great defensive team and I think our girls stayed patient which is what we didn't do yesterday.”
Junior Christy Dowd (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded her second double-double in three matches with 10 kills and 10 digs. Junior Mae Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) added 37 assists.
Georgia Southern goes back out on the road next weekend with matches at the College of Charleston on Friday night and at The Citadel Sunday afternoon.
