The Georgia Southern University golf program ranks as a perennial national power, and with the addition of the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center, that tradition will continue for many years to come.
The 25-acre facility consists of a team clubhouse, a dedicated practice putting green, a three-green short-game area, a two-tiered practice tee, a driving range and three practice holes.
The Howard House clubhouse, named in honor of Mr. Arthur Howard and his family, totals 6,000 square feet. Included within the clubhouse are coaches’ offices, a locker room, a conference room, a kitchen, a team lounge area, an indoor putting lab, a club repair area, a computer and study area for student-athletes and a ?Hall of Fame’ entry way.
The three practice holes are each designed to be played from multiple tee boxes to maximize the practice facility and allow many different yardages to be played. The first hole is a 390-yard, par 4; hole two is a 185-yard, par 3, and the final hole is a 330-yard, par 4. Each green on the practice holes has been designed to have at least three distinct target areas, allowing for up to three different pin locations and making the facility a nine-hole course.
"The Bennett Ramsey Golf Facility and the Howard House have surpassed all of the dreams that I had for a practice facility here at Georgia Southern," said eighth-year head coach Larry Mays. "We are so lucky to have such great support from our boosters, the community and our athletic administration to produce such a beautiful facility. The results of all of the hard work are apparent both by the players that we have been able to recruit to play for our team and by the ability to develop those players here at the practice facility. I look forward to the many years of success that the facility will bring to Georgia Southern Golf."
The facility also includes the 3,000-square-foot Talmadge House which will house a superintendent’s office, as well as a classroom and a storage area. Maintenance on the facility is in conjunction with Ogeechee Tech. Students enrolled in the Turf Grass Degree program benefit from the interactive lab, gaining hands-on experience on an actual golf course.
"We are currently finalizing the second phase of our three phase construction schedule and the facility looks great," said Southern Boosters President John Mulherin. "A lot of people have helped get us to this point and we are extremely grateful for their generosity. As the practice facility continues to mature, we see more and more of our vision coming true. It really is a spectacular venue".
