CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The College of Charleston’s Tiffany Blum recorded 15 kills with no errors in the Cougars’ 3-0 (30-16, 31-29, 30-23) victory over Georgia Southern Friday night in the first round of the Southern Conference Volleyball Tournament held at Chattanooga's Maclellan Gym.
GSU, who earned the No. 8 seed, ends its season at 10-21. The top-seeded Cougars advance to the semifinals.
Michelle Uzoh (San Antonio, Texas) capped off her fine freshman campaign with 10 kills and no errors for a .526 attack percentage. Junior Bianca Julio (Curitiba, Brazil) recorded a team-high 12 kills and senior Bailey Coleman (Awendaw, S.C.) added 10. Senior Flavia Pereira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) paced the defense with a match-high 18 digs. Freshman Jessica Bradford (Columbia, Md.) dished out 39 assists.
After Charleston closed out game one with a 15-3 run, the two teams were separated by no more than three points in the second frame until a 4-0 CofC run stretched the Cougars’ lead to 23-18. But Georgia Southern answered with four straight points, getting two kills from Coleman and an ace from Julio.
The Eagles held off two match points to tie the score at 29-29, but the Cougars closed out the game with a kill and a GSU error.
Charleston never trailed in game three to finish off the match.
