STATESBORO, Ga. – With the spring season rapidly approaching, head Coach
Sean McCaffrey named his team captain for the 2017-18 season. The lone senior on the team,
Ella Monsey, will step into the leadership role following an impressive end to 2017 and fall season.
"I am very proud that Ella will be representing the Eagles tennis program as team captain this upcoming spring," Head coach
Sean McCaffrey said. "Ella showed her strengths this fall as she proved her leadership abilities both on and off the court. I have no doubt in Ella's dedication and commitment in moving our program forward. The team captain plays a key role in helping establish comradery, communication, discipline and accountability within the program. Ella will do a fantastic job representing her teammates and Georgia Southern tennis as we strive for excellence in all that we do."
The Ipswich, Suffolk native was a two sport athlete in high school where she played tennis and hockey, helping the team reach a county championship in 2012. During her prep years Monsey won the Independent Association Prep School championships and was ranked No. 6 in the UK for 18U singles. Her success didn't stop there adding a No. 1 ranking in 12U, 14U, 16U, and 18U divisions in Suffolk.
The three time Suffolk Junior Tennis Player of the Year began her career at Long Beach State University where she played two seasons for the Beach recording an 11-6 record. In her final season with LBSU, Monsey was able to post an 8-5 record primarily from the No. 6 position before transferring to Statesboro to join the Eagles.
In her first season with the Eagles, Monsey began the year 4-1 in doubles play and won 11 matches alongside of partner
Emilia Bujan. Monsey and Bujan collected two four-match winning streaks during the season. Ella was also selected to the Sun Belt Commissioners List during the 2016-17 season.
"It is an honor and a privilege to be named team captain for my senior year. I am thoroughly enjoying leading a group of fantastic girls this season."
Ella Monsey said. Monsey is the lone senior on a young and talented Eagles team.
The women's tennis team has set up a campaign to raise money for breast cancer awareness! The Eagles will be participating in a Tennis Marathon on January 13, 2018 at the Wallis Tennis Center. The event will run from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and fans are encouraged to come out and support the cause. For more information on the event
