Dr. Ronald "RJ" Goubeaux joined Georgia Southern Athletics in June of 2026 after serving as the Director of Basketball Performance at Radford University, where he oversaw strength and conditioning programs for men's and women's basketball, men's soccer, men's and women's tennis, softball and cross country. At Georgia Southern, he works with men's basketball, rifle and men's golf.
A veteran strength and conditioning professional with nearly two decades of experience, Goubeaux has worked with student-athletes at every level, from collegiate athletics to professional and international competition. Prior to Radford, he served as Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports at Mercer University, supervising programming and staff development while working directly with men's basketball, golf, volleyball, beach volleyball, cross country, track and field and tennis.
Before his time at Mercer, Goubeaux spent five years at UNC Greensboro as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach and adjunct professor. During his tenure, he directed performance programs for men's basketball, women's golf, track and field/cross country and volleyball, while also teaching graduate-level sport performance courses and assisting with the renovation of the school's strength and conditioning facilities.
Goubeaux began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M-Kingsville and has also held positions with Inside Edge Fitness, Dynamic Sports Performance and the University of Maryland. Additionally, he gained valuable experience working with the NHL's Washington Capitals as a strength and conditioning intern.
A native of the Washington, D.C., area, Goubeaux earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from George Mason University, a Master of Science in Kinesiology from Texas A&M-Kingsville and a Ph.D. in Exercise and Sport Science from Liberty University. He holds numerous industry certifications, including Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, USA Weightlifting Level 1, Functional Movement Systems Level 1 and Certified Nutrition Coach.
As a former professional volleyball player, Goubeaux competed internationally in Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Norway, and was a member of the United States National Team. His unique combination of elite playing experience, academic achievement and coaching expertise has helped him develop evidence-based training programs designed to maximize athletic performance while reducing injury risk.
