CONWAY, S.C. — Georgia Southern played Coastal Carolina to a 1-1 draw Friday at Coastal Carolina to open Sun Belt Conference play. Both goals came in the first half, and the Eagles finished with a 12-9 shot advantage and a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.

In the first half, the Eagles generated the first sustained pressure, earning three corner kicks between the 7th and 13th minutes and forcing a save on Broden Beorlegui's shot in the 8th minute. Coastal Carolina moved ahead 1-0 in the 18th minute on Alberto de Miguel's goal from Hector Blanco, but Beorlegui converted a penalty kick in the 19th minute to tie the match 1-1. The half turned physical after the equalizer, with six fouls and two yellow cards between the 30th and 40th minutes, before the Eagles added a late corner and Kevin Gjevik shot as the match reached halftime tied 1-1.

In the second half, Charlie Votel sent the Eagles' early chance off the left woodwork in the 53rd minute after Coastal Carolina earned a corner in the opening minutes. Coastal Carolina put together an extended attacking stretch from the 56th to the 67th minute, taking six shots and a corner, but Luca Maxim made three saves as the match remained 1-1. The Eagles pushed late with shots from Joldy Diaz, Broden Beorlegui, and Mitch Picksley from the 75th through the 84th minute, then added a corner in the 85th minute and forced a Will Devine save on Diaz in the 88th minute. The closing minutes included a yellow card to Harry Dale and a red card to Alberto de Miguel in the 88th minute, a Coastal Carolina shot high in the 89th minute, and Devine's save on Picksley in the 90th minute, leaving the match tied 1-1.

Broden Beorlegui scored the Eagles' goal, converted his penalty kick, and led the team with four shots, including three on goal. Luca Maxim played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves. Mitch Picksley added three shots, putting one on frame.

The Eagles are 4-1-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play. Coastal Carolina is 1-3-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.
