Eagles Sweep Monarchs to Stay Undefeated in Sun Belt Play

NORFOLK, Va. – The Georgia Southern volleyball team (11-2, 2-0 SBC) defeated with a 3-0 sweep the Old Dominion Monarchs (3-10, 0-2 SBC) solidifying a hot start to conference play.
"Proud of the effort tonight," head coach Chad Willis said. "I thought we did a nice job of playing clean and handling some of ODU's press in Set One and Set Three. Our defense did a nice job of extending rallies, which opened up things offensively. Hats off to our staff and team for the preparation and execution on the road and earning back-to-back sweeps."
The Eagles continued their strong start to conference play Friday night, rolling past Old Dominion in straight sets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-20), to remain unbeaten in Sun Belt action.
The Eagles leaned on a balanced attack and steady defense to overpower the Monarchs.
Reagan Barth paced the offense with 16 kills, while teammates Sam Bowron and Lydia Seymour added 12 and 10, respectively. Setter Kirsten Barrett orchestrated the attack with 32 assists, helping Georgia Southern hit an efficient .267 as a team.
Defensively, libero Maddie Cugino anchored the back row with 23 digs, one of three Eagles to reach double digits in the category alongside Mayte Camacho and Barrett 11 digs respectively. Despite Old Dominion matching Georgia Southern with 61 total digs, the Monarchs couldn't overcome their .096 hitting percentage.
Old Dominion was led by Elisa Maggi, who finished with eight kills and 17 digs, while setter Kyra Hampton handed out 27 assists. LeeAnne Lowery chipped in seven kills and four blocks for the Monarchs.
After edging out a tight first set, Georgia Southern seized momentum with a dominant second frame, holding ODU to just 12 points. The Eagles then closed out the sweep in the third, using late kills and timely defense to fend off a Monarchs rally.
Georgia Southern returns home next weekend to host Marshall, while Old Dominion looks to regroup before continuing league play.
