
Eagles Late Surge Falls Short at ECU Tuesday

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Three Eagles scored in double-figures on Tuesday evening at Minges Coliseum, as Georgia Southern men's basketball (0-1) fell to East Carolina (1-0), 92-89, to open the 2025-26 season.
Redshirt-senior Alden Applewhite led the way with 21 points, while Tyren Moore tallied 18 points in his return to the Eagles roster. Spudd Webb chipped in 16 points on 50 percent shooting, rounding out the three guys in double-figures.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both the Eagles and Pirates used five-point runs to begin the evening, before the Eagles claimed their first lead of the game just before the 14-minute mark, 15-14.
- The two sides traded buckets for the next five minutes, as Alden Applewhite dropped nine points in the final nine minutes, half of his first-half tally.
- At the break, the Pirates led 44-42, shooting 45.7% from the field and collecting 21 rebounds
- Trailing by 10 with 14:42 left in the second half, Georgia Southern used a collective 16-3 run to push the Eagles to a 68-64 lead.
- The Pirates extended their lead with 32 seconds to play, 88-82, before free throws by Tyren Moore, Spudd Webb, and Applewhite cashed in four free throws to cut the ECU lead to one.
NOTES
- Alden Applewhite finished the evening with 21 points, five rebounds, one assist, and two steals. His 21-point tally was one off his Division I career-high.
- Eight different Eagles registered minutes on the night, making their Georgia Southern or collegiate debuts.
- Tyren Moore was one of three Eagles in double figures on Tuesday, tallying 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting. He dropped in four three-pointers, tallied a rebound, and added four assists.
- Spudd Webb finished the evening 5-for-10 from the field, tallying 16 points, including a 6-for-7 line from the charity stripe. He added four rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal.
- Georgia Southern's bench chipped in 26 points in Tuesday's loss, while the Eagles as a whole produced 40 points in the paint and tallied 17 points off turnovers.
UP NEXT
- Georgia Southern returns to the friendly confines of the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center on Saturday to face off against UNC Asheville. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
