Kicker named special teams player of the week
NEW ORLEANS - Georgia Southern kicker Michael Lantz was named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance Thursday against Georgia State. It marks the first honor of the season for the Peachtree City, Georgia, native, who played an integral part in the Eagles' win over the Panthers.
Offensive Player of the Week - Gunnar Watson, Troy
Gunnar Watson had the game of his career as the Trojans won a key SBC West Division game to grab sole possession of first place in the division ... Completed 20 passes for a career-high 392 yards in addition to three touchdown passes in the second half, he also rushed for a score as he was responsible for all four of Troy's touchdowns in the 31-13 victory ... Nine passes of 19-plus yards
Defensive Player of the Week - Cameron Whitfield, Louisiana
Had 3.5 sacks, just .5 off the school record, with three strip sacks with all three being recovered by the Cajuns ... one of his forced fumbles was returned 55 yards for a touchdown to give Louisiana a 33-14 lead ... his seven tackles were a career high.
Special Teams Player of the Week - Michael Lantz, Georgia Southern
Michael Lantz was the leading scorer for Georgia Southern as the Eagles downed Georgia State to become bowl eligible. Lantz connected on all three of his field goals (35, 34, 40) and all five PATs for 14 points. He also had six touchbacks on eight kickoffs to help control the field position battle.
Georgia Southern (6-2, 3-1 SBC) will travel to Texas State (5-3, 2-2 SBC) on Saturday.
