Men’s Soccer Opens Fall Practice on Tuesday, August 9

Early morning practice signifies the beginning of the 2022 season

STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern men's soccer team opened their 2022 practice schedule with an early morning practice on Tuesday, August 9, on the banks of Beautiful Eagle Creek.

This was the first chance for the men's soccer squad to work on the field, and spirits were high as the practice began bright and early at 7 a.m.

After the opening stretches and drills, the players were split into four groups: the blue team, the green team, the pink team, and the gray team. The teams worked on touch-passes, trying to become the first team to reach a certain number of touch-passes before the other teams. In the end, the pink team came out victorious in this game.

Of the 31 student-athletes on the roster, 21 of them are new faces to the program. 17 are true freshman, 12 of which have hometowns in the US, while five were born internationally. The other four newcomers are all transfers from other Division I programs, with one being a graduate transfer.

After the morning period, the student-athletes were dispersed to take care of academic responsibilities before Wednesday's first day of classes. Freshmen went to meet their professors while upperclassmen prepared for their classes.

In the afternoon, the teams gathered back at the practice fields at Eagle Creek to begin the Blue and White scrimmage, but due to inclement weather and field conditions, the scrimmage was called off.

The GS men's soccer team will scrimmage two teams in a doubleheader on Sunday, August 14, at Erk Russell Park. At 2 p.m., the Eagles will take on Georgia Southwestern State, followed by an Eagles vs. Eagles matchup with Winthrop at 7 p.m. Both exhibitions are open to the public and free to attend.
