SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Mason Williams birdied three of his final five holes to shoot a 71 and tie for 20th at the NCAA Championships Monday at Grayhawk Golf Club.
Williams began his day on the back 9 and was 3-over with five holes to go. He hit his tee shot to within two feet on the par-3 5th and made birdie. The senior followed that by chipping in from 10 feet off the green on the par-4 sixth.Â
After finding the greenside bunker on 7 and posting bogey there, he hit his tee shot on the par-3 8th left of the hole and made the downhill 12-footer to move to 1-over on the day. Williams hit his approach on 9 left of the hole, and his 15-footer for birdie came up just short.Â
Williams put his approach on 10 to within two feet and tapped in to get the day started with a birdie. He made a 12-footer for par on 12 before finding the fairway bunker with his drive on 15. His approach left six feet, and he made the putt for birdie to move to 2-under on the day.Â
Williams (+7) finished in a tie with four others, a stroke back of five-way tie for 15th. Vanderbilt freshman Gordon Sargent (E) took home medalist honors by winning a four-way playoff over Ryan Burnett of North Carolina, Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra of Oklahoma State and Parker Coody of Texas.
