Williams Leads Men’s Golf at NCAA Championships

The senior is tied for 14th.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Mason Williams shot a 73 to lead the Georgia Southern men's golf team in the second round of the NCAA Championships Saturday afternoon at Grayhawk Golf Club.

Georgia Southern (+40) is tied with Ohio State for 24th, 15 strokes behind No. 10 Florida (+25), No. 13 Stanford and No. 27 Oregon, which are tied for 14th. The top-15 teams and nine individuals not on those teams after Sunday's third round advance to a fourth round Monday. The individual medalist will be determined after Monday's fourth round, and the top eight teams advance to match play Tuesday.

Williams (+2) is tied for 14th with three other players and currently inside the cutline to advance as an individual. The Eagles were in the last group to tee off today and had to fight a gusty wind as well as the heat of the day. Williams managed to scratch out 15 pars and three bogeys to stay in the top-15 on the individual leaderboard.

Wilson Andress shot 75, Ben Carr posted a 78 and Brantley Baker carded a 79 to make up the other Eagle counters.

One of only two teams to shoot under par on the day (-5), top-ranked Oklahoma (+2) jumped to the top of the team leaderboard and has a two-stroke lead over third-ranked Vanderbilt (+4). Second-ranked Oklahoma State (+6), the only other team under par today (-3) is third, followed by fifth-ranked North Carolina (+9). Defending champion and sixth-ranked Pepperdine (+16) rounds out the top-5.

The top three teams on the leaderboard also held the top four spots in the quest for an individual championship. Vanderbilt's Cole Sherwood is the current leader at 3-under for the championship. He holds a single shot lead over teammate Gordon Sargent and Oklahoma State's Aman Gupta. Close behind in a tie for fourth is Oklahoma's Chris Gotterup and Jackson Suber from Ole Miss, who carded a 5-under 65 today.

The Eagles are paired with Ohio State and Liberty and will tee off the first hole at 3:15 p.m. ET (12:15 p.m. local) tomorrow.
